Transportation
Washburn County is truly the cross roads of the North with intersecting roads and highways leading to all areas of the State.
Highway 53 is a four lane high speed divided highways linking the County to the Superior-Duluth area on the North and heading South it interconnects with Highway 29, a major east - west.
Highway through the State and Interstate 94, which links between the Twin Cities, Madison, Milwaukee, and Chicago. Eau Claire and Duluth are just 75 minutes from the County on Highway 53.
Highway 63 is a major road in North West Wisconsin passing through the County from Rochester, Minnesota and points South and traveling Northeast reaching the Ashland area on the north.
Highway 70 is a two-lane road linking the State from West to East.
Washburn County is approximately two hours from the Minneapolis – St. Paul area and approximately 80 minutes between Duluth and Eau Claire of Trucking.
The County is currently with a Short Line Railroad and hopes to offer Rail Freight Service to connect with the Canadian National. The existing Track is owned by Washburn County Transit and the Wisconsin Great Northern is using the track for an Amusement Train.
Commercial Air Service is provided in Eau Claire, Duluth or the Twin Cities. The Washburn County Airport is located in Shell Lake, the County Seat.
The County has one Trucking Common Carrier; TSU is located in Shell Lake and provides daily service to many points in Western Wisconsin as well as the Minneapolis-St. Paul. (www.tsuinc.com)
